You bought new cabinets eighteen months ago, and now a door no longer sits flush and the toe kick feels soft. It is tempting to blame workmanship, but the real culprit is usually the material. In Central Florida, cabinets live in a climate that punishes the wrong construction, and the difference shows up fast.
The encouraging part is that warping is predictable, which means it is preventable. Choose the right box and the right finish, and your cabinets stay square and tight for decades.
The Box Matters More Than the Door
Most people shop cabinets by door style and color, but the cabinet box is what holds everything together over time. The box carries the weight, anchors the hinges, and either resists moisture or soaks it up. A beautiful door on a weak box is a short term win.
In our humidity, the box decides the lifespan. When the box swells or softens, doors fall out of alignment, screws lose their grip, and the whole run starts to look tired. That is why we steer every conversation toward construction first and finishes second.
Plywood, MDF, and Particleboard
Plywood is the strongest performer for Florida. Its cross layered structure resists swelling, holds fasteners well, and tolerates the occasional under sink leak far better than the alternatives. For boxes, and especially for sink bases, it is the material we recommend most often.
MDF is dense, smooth, and excellent for painted door fronts because it will not telegraph wood grain. It is not, however, where you want long exposure to standing water, so it belongs on doors and panels rather than on a sink base floor. Particleboard sits at the bottom. It is the cheapest option, and it swells and crumbles the moment moisture reaches it.
Where Humidity Attacks a Cabinet
The first failure point is almost always the sink base. Slow supply line drips, condensation on cold pipes, and everyday splashing keep that cabinet floor damp, and damp particleboard is finished. Bathroom vanities suffer the same fate, often faster, because the room stays humid after every shower.
Edges and seams are the second weak point. Wherever the protective finish is thin or chipped, moisture finds a way in and the panel begins to swell from the inside. Once that starts, it does not reverse. The fix is replacement, not repair.

We treat moisture as a design input, not an afterthought. We specify plywood boxes for sink bases and high exposure runs, fully sealed and finished edges so water cannot wick into a seam, and quality hinges and hardware that hold alignment as the home breathes through the seasons. Where painted MDF fronts make sense for the look, we place them where they shine and keep them away from standing water.
Just as important, we address the room. A well ventilated bathroom and a quick fix on any drip protect the cabinets you already paid for. Good construction and a dry environment work together, and neither one alone is enough in Central Florida.
